Victoria Holt is known as one of the greatest Gothic romance authors of the twentieth century. I recently stumbled upon her work when I was looking at this specific genre on the Goodreads website.  After reading the plot summary, I knew that I had to own this book. Once it arrived in my mailbox, I binge read the entire novel and finished it in just two days. It was highly engrossing, and the suspense was killing me to the end.

There was a strong resemblance to some of my favourite gothic romance novels, such as Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre" and Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca." After all, who can resist the classic tale of a young governess falling in love with their master? What I specifically liked about this story is the first person narrative, since I was able to fully experience the thoughts and emotional reactions to the main character, Martha Leigh. I would highly recommend this novel that loves the classic cliche of a governess falling in love with their dark, brooding and all to alluring master.
